Insurance types available
Third party liability insurance (mandatory)
If you wish to drive a car on public roads in Germany, you legally require car insurance. This ensures that any damage you cause to others – regardless of the amount – is covered.
Your third party liability insurance pays for the following: repairs to other damaged vehicles (material damage), rehabilitation measures for injured persons (personal injury), costs for rebooking a trip if the other party misses a flight or train due to the accident (financial loss).
Third party liability only covers damage to others. For damage to your own car, you need comprehensive coverage (Kasko).
A standalone third party liability policy is generally only worthwhile for older vehicles.
What is an eVB number and how do I get one?
When you take out car insurance, you will receive your eVB number (electronic insurance confirmation) immediately afterwards.
This confirmation serves as proof of third-party liability cover and is required to register your car and drive legally. You also need this confirmation when re-registering a vehicle.
Third party, fire and theft (Teilkasko – optional)
Third party, fire and theft (often referred to as Teilkasko) covers damage to your own vehicle. This includes damage caused by hail, stone chips, theft or collisions with wild animals.
Fully comprehensive (Vollkasko – optional)
Fully comprehensive insurance includes all the benefits of Teilkasko. Additionally, it protects you against vandalism, hit-and-run incidents or damage caused through your own fault. Fully comprehensive insurance is highly recommended for new cars, leased vehicles or cars financed through a loan.
Which car insurance do I need?
- New cars should be covered by fully comprehensive insurance for the first five years.
- If your car is older than five years but still worth over €4,000, third party, fire and theft is worthwhile.
- Third party liability alone is usually only suitable for old vehicles with a low value.

How much does car insurance cost?
- Covers damages you cause to third parties with your car
- Required by law
- Covers damages to your own car (e.g. caused by fire, storms, or animal collisions)
- Coverage includes broken glass, marten damage, and theft
- Includes all benefits of the partial coverage
- Coverage additionally includes protection against self-caused accidents and vandalism
How car insurance costs are calculated
The cost of car insurance is made up of various components. The biggest influence on your premium comes from the Regional Class, the Type Class, and your No-Claims Bonus.
- Regional Class (Regionalklasse): The level of the Regional Class is based on the number of claims reported in your place of residence last year. The lower the Regional Class, the cheaper your car insurance.
- Type Class (Typklasse): The level of the Type Class describes the accident risk for a specific car model. Damage claims are recorded statistically, and the Type Class is re-evaluated annually. The lower your car’s Type Class, the more you save.
- No-claims bonus (Schadenfreiheitsklasse or SF-Klasse): The no-claims bonus rates you based on your accident-free years. For every year you drive without a claim, your no-claims discount increases.
Additionally, costs depend on which add-ons you choose.
Cheaper with an excess
When taking out comprehensive insurance, you can choose whether to agree to an excess (Selbstbeteiligung) in the event of a claim. We recommend an excess of €150 for third party, fire and theft and €300 for fully comprehensive insurance. This significantly lowers your premium and is a manageable financial burden if something does happen.
How to take out car insurance in Germany
You need a few details to complete a policy. Before comparing, please have the following ready:
- Vehicle registration certificate: Part I (Fahrzeugschein): Here you will find the Manufacturer Key Number (HSN), Type Key Number (TSN), and the date of first registration, which are asked for in the comparison.
- Personal details: Your date of birth, marital status, date and country where your driving licence was issued and employment status.
Once you have filled in all fields, you will receive an overview of all the available tariffs and prices. You can select multiple tariffs to compare them directly.
After choosing a policy, you can take it out directly online and receive your eVB number instantly.
Tips for saving money
You can save a considerable amount on your premium if you consider the following:
- Contract garages: Insurers have partner garages across Germany. If you agree to a "contract garage" clause, your insurer will refer you to the nearest partner garage after an accident. You cannot choose the garage freely, but your premium will decrease by an average of 13 per cent.
- Excess: Depending on the amount of excess chosen, the premium can drop by up to 40 per cent.
- Annual payment: If you pay your premium annually rather than monthly, you save up to 10 per cent.
- Annual mileage: The fewer kilometres you drive, the lower the risk of an accident. Low-mileage drivers pay less.
- Named drivers: Tariffs are cheaper if fewer people are insured to drive the car. Anyone being allowed to drive the car is the most expensive option.
- Annual comparison: Premiums change every year, and new tariffs or insurers enter the market. It pays to make a comparison every year
